Game Art

Firstly this is a game art environment and vehicles. All the effects used in this scene are transferable to other equal like shaders or lighting type for game engines. Check out the high rez one to see more details
This is a project inspired by the Vanships of “Last Exile”. Though the design is quite different and the whole look is a combo of many other ideas, mostly having to do with WW2 planes and also I got a lot of influence form art deco designs. This project started with the plane model, and later went on to a whole environment. So I made a hanger and other props to go together with the ship.
Scene tri count= 32,866 (Which is in the bounds of current games viewable scene)
The whole hanger is 8 models duplicated many times. For example one wall with the windows is only 86 tri. Foliage is 3 models scaled and simple flats. This is repeatable objects so game engines can instance these models for better performance.
Texture wise it varies a lot, the two vehicles have 2 1024x1024 The walls for the hanger are 1024x1024 and foliage goes from 256x256-1024x1024. I never went beyond a 1024x1024 textures for this scene. I used bump maps on the tree trunk and the outside concrete, mostly were it would make some kind of visible difference. No normal maps used.
Several alpha maps for the foliage, glass, and water puddles.
Here are some pictures of the individual vehicles in different angles.
This is a map I created for the retail game Unreal Tournament 2004. The name is DM-1on1-Desolation. I started this level as a user level before I entered Epic for the UT2K4 project and decided to release it with the game. The inspiration for this level came from Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture designs. I wanted to sort of mimic his design style with my own touch.
Please take into account this is a game level these screenshots are taken in game and are not pre rendered. Plus these are just my personal highlights of the level it self.
Feel free to ask questions about Unreal level design I can put some link up for tutorials and such. (Textures, models, layout, lighting, all done by me)
I spent around 4 months doing this level on and off. This level has some models stock for the game but most of what you see was modeled by me. My aim was mostly for a good CTF level that had an interesting style visually. The main idea is tech though I tried to go away with how tech has been done in the past and kind of give it smoother more polished look. Not over abundance of stuff on walls etc. Just simple shapes and forms with good shadows on them. It was tough to do that and make it look good with all its simplicity.

This is a portrait of a friendly alien. I had a drawing I made a long time ago… Like 4 years ago and thought to my self hmm… this is a funny looking alien character. So I decided to draw him in PhotoShop. I did this in around 10hr or so. The old drawing was more like a sketch that I did when I was in high school. Atm I am just looking at old drawings and seeing what I can do with them now. Teachers telling you not to trash your old drawings were right lol. Sometimes some of your old ideas were pretty intresting.

Travelers

This is a scene of some travelers taking a small rest before going on to a quest. From left to right the characters are a Dwarf Girl (Energy Mage), Dwarf Male (Path Finder), Human Female (Nature Mage), Human Male and his Paper Elemental (Paper Master).
This painting started as a quick scene, but I quickly loved the look of it and decided to keep going and add more and more detail. The Dwarf idea with the bird perch on his helm came from my bird named Chico flying and landing on my head when making this. The paper master came from one of my favorite anime series named “R.O.D.” “Read or Die”. I had no idea how to make the paper elemental at the start, so I came up with the idea of actually making one and taking a picture of it to later place it in the scene. I think it came out well. I also wanted to make the fan like part to cover the paper master from excessive sun light. When I placed the paper model I turned off all the lights, and got a flash light to light the fan. I have a link below of the photo. I had to modify it a good bit to get it rightish in the scene.
The basic ideas for the other characters like the nature mage etc came from some sketches I have. The nature mage is actually one of my new concept designs. It was changed a bit for this scene. Also linked below. Well I had tons of fun making this. I usually do not paint much since I am a game artist mostly, but when I do paint it is great to get out of the normal groove.

Started out very rough as a quick concept of the scene with lots of water and two huge spires. I got into it more and detailed it so I came up like this. I made this in 3 days on and off so it is around 1 day and half worth of work. I really wanted to give this piece a fantasy look without being overdone in the term on unrealism more like look of LOTR.
I got the kite idea from an anime called Dot Hack.
This is a level I created while I was at Epic Games part of the assault side of the “Unreal Tournament 2004” project. This level took approximately almost one year in the making. I was in charge of making all models, textures, level layout, visual placement, ai paths, lighting, scripting, and many more for this one level. I had other projects while at Epic but this was my main one.
I did the space ship concepts (roughed out models) for the Skaarj and human ship plus most of the mandible turrets for the Assault project. Those were sent to a character modeler and later skinned by somebody else.
Enjoy the pictures. Please remember this is in game screenshots so this level has a lot more to it. This is but just a small part of this level.
I will be posting my other maps that I have done also.
This is a retail Unreal Tournament 2004 level that I created when I was on the UT2K4 project with Epic Games. This level started out with another level designer at Epic Games named Phil Cole. He started the basic layout and basic feel of the level. Once that was setup it was moved to me for visuals and polishing for the game dynamics and basically finishing this map off. While in the making Phil would still help out when ever he could since it was a map by both of us at the end.
This is mostly stock materials already done with some minor assets I made. But it was more about visual placement for this level to make it work. This level was a night time but later decided that we needed it brighter because you could not see the players in the level so it became snowy. Overall I wanted to give a sense of war torn city from factions and military. The turret picture below shows one of the turrets I did a concept for and became a model for the assault side of the game. That is my fav turret

This was an art test that was given to me by a company. I do not think I have permission to mention the company but I did get permission to be able to post this art test.
I got a total time of 4 weeks time to do this level with the UT2k4 engine I finished it in 2 weeks and a half time. The idea of this test was to get the feel of NYC in the 1920’s, I was given several small black and white images and I could choose what to do. Some pictures were from well known buildings in NYC but I did not want to do those so I decided to do apartment and homes instead. The only thing that you kind of see in the distance that is recognizable is the Brooklyn Bridge. 98% textures were created and made by me and most models were created by me. Some stuff like pipes and chains are from stock materials in UT2k4… Why remake the wheel hehe. I was also instructed to do some ideas parts of this level and I did do a good bit of the inside parts of it but the pictures here are mostly from the outside part which is the one that I concentrated the most.
While doing this project I had to buy “The Godfather” since it has some very detailed scenes in that movie of the same or close time I was constructing this level in. Plus also bought some books related to these times and also looked all over the net for anything I could get inspiration from. This is one of the most technical projects I have done and I wanted to share it here.

This is a UT2K4 level that was released with a pack of other stuff called the Community Bonus pack. This bonus pack has pretty much the official stamp of Epic Games. This map that I am showing was made for this pack. It is a death match map called DM-TelMecoMex.
The style is tech with very simple walls and just focusing more on form instead of high details.
Download here
Remember this is in Pack so to download this map your downloading tons of others. The other maps I highly recommend though. So it is not a bad download.
